Fantastic MP3 Player!! November 10, 2006 Reviewer:  DMB Fan "Ryan O." (Belleville, IL. USA)  See all my reviews >

I recently purchased this MP3 player on-line and have been using it for almost 3 weeks now and I love it!! It can play virtually any type of music file! You can store and view pictures, video's, text files and the list goes on!! This player feels a lot more durable than the iPod and offers so much more. The video isn't a great as an iPod, but I didn't buy this to watch movies, I bought it to listen to all of my music, which it does so well!! When you plug it in to a USB slot on your computer, it acts as an external hard drive, so transfering music files is so easy!
There are two things that I wish were different: The joystick-type control takes a little while to get used to, especially if you are used to using a different device. The second problem is the lack of custom accessories, but that is understandable with any new player.
Other than those two things, I can't find any problems with the Cowan iAudio X5 30GB player! I love it!!

How Did I Live Without This Device? July 19, 2006 Reviewer:  GIS Man "Andrew C." (St. Louis, MO, USA)  See all my reviews >

I elected to buy a iAUDIO X5L (which is like this model, except with a larger battery) instead of an Apple iPod Video after the demise of my last MP3 player, and I have absolutely no regrets. It's not a perfect device, but in my opinion it offers the most features and highest quality in its price range. If you're on the iPod vs. iAUDIO fence (and I know I was) read on.

Here's why I purchased iAUDIO X5L over an iPod Video:

+ Built in microphone/voice recorder (for iPod users, this option costs extra and is an add on unit)
+ Built in FM radio tuner (again, for iPod users this is a costs extra add on unit)
+ Over 35 hours of battery life (X5L iAUDIO models, over twice that of iPod)
+ Ability to record from line in or radio
+ Far more abuse tolerant aluminum (not half plastic) case
+ Wider audio format support
+ Wider operating system support
+ Better sound quality (In my opinion)/Higher sound output (will drive a nice pair of cans such as a set of Grados or full sized Sennheisers, for example)
+ Ability to read large text files (I read books on this device) while listening to music
+ No iTunes-like restrictive software necessary to use the device/no device registration needed
+ Ability to use this device directly with my digital camera to store photos
+ Ability to browse the file system on the device w/o a PC
+ Excellent media conversion tools, utilities, and media player (JetAudio - for Windows users only)

Complaints? I have only a few:

+ The user interface/navigation joystick takes some getting used to at first
+ I'd like to be able to view images while listening to music (iPods can do this by the way, so if thats gold to you then buy and iPod instead)
+ The subpack/charger is a little annoying
+ Like the iPod, the included ear buds leave much to be desired (I'd replace them with Shure or Ultimate Ears in ear monitors perhaps)
+ The included paper user manual could be a little better [...]

I'd consider getting a cradle instead of using the subpack if you are nervous that you will misplace the subpack.

A few quips aside, I'd still buy an iAUDIO X5L over any MP3 player on the market today. This device comes with my highest recommendation.

should have goten a Ipod April 11, 2006 Reviewer:  Nicholas A. Carter "astraydog" (VA, USA)  See all my reviews >

ok... I should have goten a I pod. this is a good player but lets just put it against a Ipod video player... the color on the Ipod is sooo much better, the screen size is better, the rez on the screen of a Ipod is soooooo much better. the use of the Ipod is better... it is just user friendly. Now with all that said... this is a good player... it has voice recording, line in rec. and FM radio built in. now you can not play music and look at pics at the same time...
[...] I have had to send mine back in and it took me 3 days to [contact customer service]and 3 weeks till I got it back in my hands. The adapter that you have to carry to use the thing is lost easly and it is the only way you can charge the thing. the sound is good but the head phone won't stay in your ear to save a life. in all save the time and money and buy a Ipod. please.
